A Journey to Clean Energy
Aspen One has been aspiring to power our operations with renewable energy for over 20 years. Early on, we installed solar panels on some of our buildings. But they only covered a fraction of our energy consumption. We knew we needed to think bigger. That’s when we decided to help change the board of directors for our utility Holy Cross Energy, which at the time was only sourcing 8.7% from renewables. Today, Holy Cross Energy is on track to reach 100% renewable energy by 2030 and is a model for utilities nationwide. Read the full story here.

How can you initiate similar improvements with your utility company?
Here are some tips and tricks:
- Familiarize yourself with the utility's governance structure and understand how they make decisions. Most have a board of directors, and as an energy consumer you can vote for folks that prioritize the transition to renewable energy.
- Better yet – convince your sustainably minded friends to run for the board or run yourself.
- Write to your elected officials. Encourage them to pass legislation supporting renewable energy at the local, state, and federal level. Find your officials here.
- Advocate for clean energy projects in your area. Attend meetings held by local elected officials and voice your opinion.
- Talk to your friends and family about why we need to speed up the transition to renewable energy and encourage them to advocate. There’s power in numbers!
